Blind Procedures02:07

Blind Procedures

12.7K
Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which...

Blinding01:11

Blinding

3.7K
Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Types of Biopharmaceutical Studies: Controlled and Non-Controlled Approaches

297
Biopharmaceutical studies constitute a vital field aiming to enhance drug delivery methods and refine therapeutic approaches, drawing upon diverse interdisciplinary knowledge. In research methodologies, the choice between controlled and non-controlled studies significantly influences the study's reliability and accuracy.
Non-controlled studies, commonly employed for initial exploration, lack a control group, rendering them susceptible to biases and external influences. In contrast,...

The Placebo Effect01:54

The Placebo Effect

6.6K
The placebo effect occurs when people's expectations or beliefs influence or determine their experience in a given situation. In other words, simply expecting something to happen can actually make it happen.

Methods of Documentation I: Source-Oriented Records

1.6K
Source-oriented records, or SOR, are medical record-keeping organized by the data source. The SOR system was first developed in the mid-1900s to organize the growing patient data in hospitals and other healthcare facilities.
In an SOR, each discipline involved in patient care maintains a separate medical record section. This record-keeping method enables easy tracking of patient progress and ensures healthcare staff have access to up-to-date information.

Guidelines for Writing Outcome01:11

Guidelines for Writing Outcome

3.5K
When developing expected outcomes for a patient care plan, the nurse should adhere to the following recommendations:
Patient outcomes reflect the patient's response to the goal rather than what the nurse aims to achieve. Terminology should be observable and measurable to avoid the reader's interpretation. The desired outcome should be realistic and achievable in the designated care timeframe. Expected outcomes should align with adjunctive therapies. The outcome should enhance care...

Summary

A redesigned clinical note template resulted in shorter, more visually appealing notes for residents. However, faculty reviewers found the redesigned template less accurate and useful, though better organized, with no difference in overall quality.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Informatics
  • Clinical Documentation Improvement
  • Healthcare Quality

Background:

  • Optimizing clinical note quality is crucial for effective patient care and medical education.
  • Evaluating the impact of electronic health record (EHR) note template design on documentation quality is essential.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the quality of clinical notes generated using a standard template versus a redesigned template.
  • To utilize a novel randomized clinical simulation process to assess note template effectiveness.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving PGY 1-3 Internal Medicine residents.
  • Residents documented a simulated patient encounter using either a standard or redesigned note template.
  • Note quality was assessed by resident authors and faculty reviewers using various metrics.

Main Results:

  • The redesigned template produced significantly shorter notes (103 vs. 285 lines) with no increase in completion time.
  • Residents perceived the new template as more visually appealing and less cluttered.
  • Faculty reviewers rated the redesigned notes as better organized but less up-to-date, accurate, and useful compared to the standard template.

Conclusions:

  • While residents favored the redesigned note template for its brevity and clarity, faculty assessment indicated potential trade-offs in accuracy and usefulness.
  • The study highlights the importance of comprehensive evaluation, including both resident and faculty perspectives, when redesigning clinical documentation templates.
  • A simulated clinical encounter provides a valuable method for assessing note template performance prior to implementation in practice.
