Ontario faces a growing shortage of geriatric specialists. Projections show an increasing deficit of geriatricians, geriatric psychiatrists, and Care of the Elderly physicians by 2025.
Area of Science:
- Geriatric Medicine and Psychiatry Workforce Analysis
- Healthcare Resource Planning and Forecasting
Background:
- Increasing number of older adults with complex health needs in Ontario.
- Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care initiated a resource mapping project.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the current (2018) and projected (2025) number of specialist physician resources for the elderly in Ontario.
- To identify deficits in geriatric specialist physician supply relative to population demand.
Main Methods:
- Defined geriatric specialist physicians as geriatricians, geriatric psychiatrists, and Care of the Elderly (COE) physicians.
- Calculated current clinical full-time-equivalent complement (CFTE) for geriatric medicine and psychiatry specialists.
- Projected new physician entrants and retirements by 2025, comparing against established specialist/population ratios.
Main Results:
- Identified a current CFTE deficit of 150.5 for geriatricians and 116.3 for geriatric psychiatrists.
- Projected deficits to increase by 2025: at least 210.35 for geriatricians and 194.6 for geriatric psychiatrists.
- Found that approximately 30% of COE physicians directly support specialized elderly care services.
Conclusions:
- Significant current and anticipated undersupply of geriatricians, geriatric psychiatrists, and COE physicians in Ontario.
- The projected physician supply will not meet the anticipated demand from the aging population.
