Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the relationship between sleep duration, sleep regularity, and peripheral vascular function in young adult college students.
  • To explore if irregular sleep patterns are associated with impaired vascular function in a young, healthy population.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-one healthy undergraduates underwent 14-day wrist actigraphy for sleep monitoring.
  • Macrovascular function was assessed via brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD).
  • Microvascular function was evaluated using passive leg movement (PLM) to measure leg blood flow (LBF).

Main Results:

  • Mean sleep duration showed no association with FMD or PLM responses.
  • Greater sleep duration irregularity (higher standard deviation) was significantly linked to poorer microvascular function (PLM-induced hyperemia).
  • Individuals with high sleep duration variability had approximately 45% lower microvascular responses compared to those with low variability.

Conclusions:

  • Irregular sleep duration is associated with diminished microvascular function in young adults.
  • These findings suggest that sleep regularity is a critical factor in cardiovascular health.
  • Sleep patterns, particularly their regularity, may represent a modifiable risk factor for CVD.
