Summary

This study reports on treating internal root resorption in lateral incisors caused by dens invaginatus. Root canal treatment with Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) or gutta-percha showed positive outcomes.

Background:

  • Internal root resorption (IRR) is a pathological process.
  • Dens invaginatus (DI), or palatal invagination, can predispose teeth to IRR.
  • This report focuses on IRR in lateral incisors associated with DI.

Observation:

  • Three cases of lateral incisors with IRR and DI were treated.
  • Dens invaginatus type 2 was identified as a potential etiology for IRR in these cases.
  • Two cases received root canal treatment with a Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) apical plug, and one received gutta-percha obturation.

Findings:

  • All treated teeth demonstrated successful management and were followed over time.
  • The study highlights the potential underestimation of the association between IRR and DI.
  • Root canal therapy appears effective for managing IRR secondary to DI.

Implications:

  • The association between internal root resorption and dens invaginatus may be more prevalent than currently recognized.
  • Further research is warranted to investigate the incidence and management of this condition.
  • Clinicians should consider dens invaginatus in the differential diagnosis of internal root resorption.
