Background:

  • Over 40,000 articles on COVID-19 were published by August 2020.
  • 1,552 of these were indexed as case reports (COVID Group).
  • A comparison group (ID Group) of 496 infectious disease case reports (excluding COVID-19) was identified.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore and compare authorship patterns in COVID-19 case reports versus other infectious disease case reports.
  • To identify trends in the number of authors per manuscript.

Main Methods:

  • Comparative analysis of authorship data from Medline.
  • Statistical comparison of mean authors, median authors, and the proportion of manuscripts with 15+ authors between the COVID Group and ID Group.

Main Results:

  • COVID-19 case reports had a mean of 6.1 authors, compared to 6.2 in the ID Group (p=0.43).
  • Significantly more COVID-19 case reports (3.3%) had 15 or more authors than the ID Group (1.4%) (p=0.03).
  • 14% of COVID-19 case reports had 10+ authors, with 1% authored by 20+ individuals.

Conclusions:

  • COVID-19 case reports demonstrate a trend of authorship proliferation.
  • This trend is evident even in concise, two-page case reports, often involving over 15 scientists.
