Introduction
Exercise stress testing, commonly known as a treadmill test, is a noninvasive procedure used to evaluate cardiovascular function and diagnose heart conditions.
Definition
An exercise stress test measures the heart's response to exertion using a treadmill or stationary bicycle. Chest electrodes record the heart's electrical activity through an ECG, and blood pressure is monitored regularly.

    • To investigate the effect of a pre-exercise cycling protocol on exercise regulation with and without a virtual opponent.

    • Twelve trained cyclists completed four 4-km time trials on a cycle ergometer.
    • Conditions included rested state (RS) or a preceding 10-min cycling protocol (CP), with or without a virtual opponent (NO vs. OP).
    • Pacing and power output were analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA.

    Main Results:

    • Cyclists adopted a faster pace and achieved better finishing times when racing against an opponent from a rested state (RS-OP vs. RS-NO).
    • No significant differences in pacing or performance were observed when a preceding cycling protocol was performed (CP-NO vs. CP-OP).

    Conclusions:

    • The performance-enhancing effect of a virtual opponent is negated by prior exercise.
    • Perceived exertion significantly alters cyclists' responsiveness to competitive stimuli during performance.
