Summary

Background:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease causing joint inflammation and pain.
  • Current RA treatments aim to manage symptoms and slow disease progression.
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2) involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2) in treating rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
  • To assess the impact of HBO2 on disease activity and pain in RA patients.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot study involving 10 RA subjects.
  • Subjects received 30 HBO2 treatments over 6 to 10 weeks.
  • Serial rheumatologic evaluations using validated scales (DAS28, RA-PID3, Pain and Sleep Quality Questionnaire) were conducted at baseline, during treatment, and at 6-month follow-up.

Main Results:

  • Statistically significant improvements in DAS28 scores (Global Health, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate) were observed.

Conclusions:

  • Further research with larger sample sizes and control groups is warranted to confirm these findings.
