Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate an interactive touchscreen tool for identifying cognitive delay in 18- to 24-month-old children.
  • To assess the concurrent validity of the touchscreen tool against a standardized developmental assessment.

Main Methods:

  • 87 children (mean age 20.4 months) were assessed using the Bayley Scale of Infant and Toddler Development-third edition (BSID-III) and a touchscreen problem-solving measure (Babyscreen V.1.5).
  • Internal consistency and concurrent validity between the two measures were examined.
  • Cognitive delay was indicated by a BSID-III cognitive composite score (BSID-IIIcc) ≤1 SD below the population mean.

Main Results:

  • The Babyscreen showed moderate positive correlation with BSID-IIIcc, indicating reasonable concurrent validity (r=0.414, p<0.001).
  • Children with lower BSID-IIIcc scores had significantly lower Babyscreen scores and age-adjusted z-scores.
  • The Babyscreen achieved an area under the curve of 0.787 for predicting low normal BSID-IIIcc, with a z-score of <-0.44 providing 82.4% sensitivity and 71.4% specificity.

Conclusions:

  • A touchscreen-based application demonstrates concurrent validity with the BSID-III cognitive composite score.
  • This interactive tool is suitable for screening cognitive delay in children aged 18-24 months.
  • The findings support the use of this tool for early identification of cognitive delays in toddlers.
