Summary

Post-concussive visually induced dizziness (VID) can prolong recovery. A combination of vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) and visual desensitization effectively improved dizziness and gait in patients with concussion.

Background:

  • Post-concussive visually induced dizziness (VID) is a common cause of prolonged recovery after concussion.
  • Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is recommended for dizziness, but specific interventions for VID are understudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a combined VRT and technology-enhanced visual desensitization program for post-concussive VID.
  • To assess improvements in subjective and objective measures of dizziness and gait.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case series of 26 individuals with post-concussive dizziness.
  • 23 participants received conventional VRT combined with a technology-enhanced visual desensitization home exercise program.
  • Data collected included self-report and objective measures at initial evaluation and discharge.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements were observed in subjective and objective measures of dizziness and gait post-intervention (p < .05).
  • Pre-injury migraine history did not affect treatment response.
  • Pre-injury depression/anxiety correlated with increased self-reported post-treatment anxiety.

Conclusions:

  • Combined therapy, including VRT and visual desensitization, improved outcomes for post-concussive dizziness.
  • Patients with concussion experiencing dizziness warrant assessment for VID.
  • Technology-enhanced visual desensitization may be a beneficial addition to VRT for post-concussive patients.
