Industrial workers know eye protection is vital but don't always use it. Educational programs are needed to improve the use of Personal Protective Eyewear (PPE) in workplaces.
Area of Science:
- Occupational Health
- Ophthalmology
- Industrial Safety
Background:
- Work-related eye injuries lead to significant vision loss, yet most are preventable.
- This study investigates industrial workers' perceptions and usage of Personal Protective Eyewear (PPE) in the UAE.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess awareness and practices regarding PPE among industrial workers.
- To identify barriers to consistent PPE usage in small-scale industrial settings.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study conducted in Al-Ain City, UAE (October 2018 - June 2019).
- 500 industrial workers completed questionnaires on demographics, occupational history, hazard awareness, and PPE usage.
- Data analyzed for associations between worker characteristics and PPE use.
Main Results:
- Workers had high awareness of eye injury risks but rarely used PPE consistently.
- Primary reasons for non-usage included work demands (95%) and poor vision through lenses (75%).
- Younger workers and those with less experience used PPE less frequently.
Conclusions:
- A significant gap exists between awareness of PPE value and its actual workplace application.
- Targeted educational initiatives are recommended to promote consistent eye safety practices and proper PPE utilization in industrial environments.
