Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Biomaterials Science
  • Reconstructive Surgery

Background:

  • Trapeziectomy is a common procedure for thumb base osteoarthritis.
  • Failures can occur due to persistent pain and impingement.
  • Revision strategies are needed for failed trapeziectomy cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the medium-term outcomes of Pyrocardan® interposition arthroplasty after failed trapeziectomy.
  • To assess pain, function, range of motion, and strength following revision surgery.
  • To determine patient satisfaction and radiological results.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of eight female patients (average age 63) undergoing Pyrocardan® implant after trapeziectomy failure.
  • Average follow-up of 54 months.

  • Clinical and radiological assessments including VAS, QuickDASH, PRWE, range of motion, and strength.
  • Main Results:

    • Significant reduction in pain (VAS 6.3 to 2.5) and improvement in function (QuickDASH 52.9 to 30.7, PRWE 49.1 to 31.0).
    • No significant changes in strength or range of motion.
    • Seven out of eight patients reported satisfaction; no implant dislocation or adverse bone reaction observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Pyrocardan® interposition arthroplasty is an effective medium-term solution for revision of failed trapeziectomy.
    • The procedure successfully alleviates pain and enhances function in cases of severe first metacarpal subsidence.
    • This implant offers a safe and satisfactory option for complex thumb base reconstruction.
