    Background:

    • Spinal fusion surgery aims to achieve bony union between vertebrae.
    • Autogenous bone grafts are traditionally used but have limitations.
    • Allograft bone offers an alternative source for spinal fusion.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy of cryopreserved allograft bone versus autogenous bone in spinal fusion.
    • To evaluate the safety and histologic characteristics of cryopreserved bone grafts.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 152 spinal fusions in 143 patients over 4 years.
    • Comparison between autogenous bone graft (n=62) and frozen cryopreserved allograft bone (n=90).
    • Surgical exploration and histologic evaluation of 34 spinal fusions.

    Main Results:

    • Successful arthrodesis rates were 87% for autogenous bone and 86.6% for cryopreserved allograft bone.
    • Histologic analysis revealed viable osteocytes, osteoid formation, and absence of inflammatory response in allograft samples.
    • No significant difference in bone union rates was observed between the two graft types.

    • Cryopreserved bone allografts are a safe and effective option for spinal fusion.
