A 33-year-old male experienced sudden myopia and blurred vision due to Triplixam, a hypertension medication. Symptoms resolved after discontinuing the drug, highlighting a potential adverse effect of indapamide.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Cardiology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Systemic hypertension is commonly treated with medications like Triplixam.
- Adverse ocular side effects from systemic hypertension drugs are rare.
- Triplixam contains amlodipine, indapamide, and perindopril arginine.
Observation:
- A 33-year-old male presented with acute bilateral blurred vision.
- Examination revealed myopia, lens thickening, choroidal effusion, and macular striae.
- These ocular changes were associated with the use of Triplixam.
Findings:
- The patient's symptoms and objective findings resolved completely after discontinuing Triplixam.
- The myopia was likely caused by indapamide-induced ciliary body reaction leading to lens thickening and refractive index changes.
- Retinal striae were attributed to the volume effect of choroidal effusion.
Implications:
- This case highlights a potential, albeit uncommon, adverse ocular effect of Triplixam, likely due to its indapamide component.
- Physicians, including cardiologists and general practitioners, should be aware of this possible side effect when prescribing Triplixam for hypertension.
- Prompt recognition and drug discontinuation can lead to complete resolution of these visual disturbances.
