Giant left atrium, a condition rarely causing dysphagia, was successfully treated with mitral valve replacement. This surgical technique restored the atrium to an anatomical size, resolving cardiac and compression symptoms.

  • Giant left atrium, defined as >6.5 cm diameter, can compress the esophagus causing dysphagia.
  • Mitral valve disease is a common cause of left atrial enlargement.
  • Compression symptoms are the primary indication for left atrial volume reduction plasty during mitral valve surgery.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with symptoms attributed to a giant left atrium.
  • Mitral valve replacement was performed.
  • A novel surgical technique was employed to reduce the left atrial volume.

Findings:

  • The surgical technique successfully transformed the giant left atrium into an anatomical chamber.
  • Both cardiac and esophageal compression symptoms were eliminated post-surgery.
  • The patient experienced resolution of dysphagia.
