    Summary

    Imaging splenic ruptures revealed key findings. While radiography showed some abnormalities, ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) proved more effective in detecting splenic lesions and fluid, aiding diagnosis.

    Background:

    • Splenic rupture is a critical condition requiring accurate diagnosis.
    • Conventional imaging modalities have limitations in detecting splenic injuries.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the diagnostic performance of radiography, ultrasonography, and computed tomography (CT) in splenic ruptures.
    • To compare the sensitivity of different imaging techniques for splenic trauma.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of imaging results from 30 patients with splenic ruptures.
    • Review of radiography (thoracic and abdominal), ultrasonography, and CT scans.
    • Correlation of imaging findings with the presence of splenic lesions and fluid.

    Main Results:

    • Radiography identified abnormalities in a minority of cases (7/30 thoracic, 8/19 abdominal).
    • Initial ultrasonography often detected intraperitoneal fluid but rarely focal splenic lesions; however, all 19 examined patients eventually showed abnormalities.
    • Computed tomography (CT) revealed abnormalities in all 10 patients studied, including irregular splenic parenchyma, subcapsular fluid, and intraperitoneal fluid.

    Conclusions:

    • Computed tomography (CT) is highly sensitive for detecting splenic lesions and associated fluid in splenic ruptures.
    • Ultrasonography is useful for detecting intraperitoneal fluid, and serial examinations can reveal splenic abnormalities.
    • Radiography has limited utility in diagnosing splenic rupture compared to ultrasonography and CT.
