Oral health behaviors, not tooth count, significantly impact nutrition in older adults. Comprehensive health education is crucial for improving dietary intake and overall well-being in this population.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Nutritional Science
- Oral Health
Background:
- Compromised oral health and masticatory dysfunction can lead to poor nutrition.
- Understanding the interplay between oral health, behavior, and nutritional status is vital for public health.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the associations among nutritional status, oral health behavior, and self-assessed oral function in adults over 50.
- To identify specific nutritional deficiencies and excesses within the study population.
Main Methods:
- A community-based survey of 701 adults aged over 50 in Ebina city, Japan.
- Assessment of remaining teeth, oral health behavior, and oral function using validated checklists.
- Nutritional status evaluation via a brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire against Japanese Dietary Reference Intakes.
Main Results:
- While remaining tooth count did not correlate with nutritional intake, oral health behavior showed a significant correlation.
- High prevalence of insufficient intake for Vitamin A (19%), Vitamin B1 (35.5%), and dietary fiber (35.5%).
- Excessive salt intake was observed in 88.9% of subjects; Vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, copper, and protein intake were generally sufficient.
Conclusions:
- Oral health behavior is a key determinant of nutritional status in older adults.
- Oral function, while important for food choice, did not directly correlate with nutritional intake in this study.
- Integrated health education focusing on both nutrition and oral health is recommended for health promotion.
