Methodological issues in childhood depression: a review of the literature

Sources and types of information used to assess depressed children are identified in a survey of the diagnostic criteria, assessment methods, and instruments reported in relevant studies in six core journals. Children's self-reports are the most frequently used source of data; the reliability of information provided by classmates is gradually gaining acceptance. The need for development of consistent criteria and sound instruments is highlighted.
