Inhaled Medications01:23

Inhaled Medications

595
Inhaled medications are crucial for managing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. They are essential for effective treatment and control, ensuring optimal respiratory health and well-being. Inhaled medication delivers drugs directly to the lungs, providing a rapid onset of action and reducing systemic side effects compared to oral or injectable medications. Three primary types of inhalation devices are used to administer these medications: nebulizers, metered-dose inhalers...

Transmission-based Precautions II: Airborne and Protective Environment

1.7K
Transmission-based precautions are for patients infected or suspected to be infected (or colonized) with organisms posing a significant risk to others. The transmission precautions include airborne and protective environment precautions.
Airborne precautions:
Use airborne precautions when treating patients known or suspected to have diseases that spread through the air—for example, tuberculosis or measles. These organisms are present in smaller droplets expelled by an infected person and...

Breathing01:05

Breathing

63.5K
The process of breathing, inhaling and exhaling, involves the coordinated movement of the chest wall, the lungs, and the muscles that move them. Two muscle groups with important roles in breathing are the diaphragm, located directly below the lungs, and the intercostal muscles, which lie between the ribs. When the diaphragm contracts, it moves downward, increasing the volume of the thoracic cavity and creating more room for the lungs to expand. When the intercostal muscles contract, the ribs...

Physical Methods for Controlling Microbial Growth: Radiation and Filtration

853
Radiation and filtration are essential tools for microbial control, targeting microorganisms through distinct mechanisms. Radiation eliminates microbes by damaging their DNA, either killing them or inhibiting their growth. Based on wavelength, radiation is classified into two types: nonionizing and ionizing radiation.Non-ionizing radiation, such as UV radiation (200–400 nm), is absorbed by DNA, causing defects that effectively disinfect surfaces, air, and water, including safety cabinets.

Oxygen Delivering System I: Nasal Cannula and Face Mask

1.1K
The human body requires oxygen to function, and when the natural process of respiration is hindered, external devices, including the following, are needed to help deliver this vital gas.
Nasal Cannula
A nasal cannula is a lightweight tube split at one end into two prongs and placed in the nostrils. It is typically used to deliver low to medium levels of oxygen.
Suggested flow rate: The suggested flow rate for a nasal cannula typically ranges between 1 and 6 L/min.
Oxygen percentage setting:...

Area of Science:

  • Healthcare-associated infections
  • Environmental microbiology
  • Surgical safety

Background:

  • Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a major cause of hospital-acquired infections, increasing healthcare costs.
  • Airborne particulate matter is a known vector for pathogenic bacteria, posing a risk in sterile environments like operating rooms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a mobile air decontamination and recirculation unit in improving operating room air quality.
  • To assess the impact of the unit on airborne particulate levels.

Main Methods:

  • A mobile unit with a UV-C reactor and HEPA filter was tested in an operating room.
  • Airborne particulate counts (≥0.3 to >10 µm) were measured in four phases: device OFF (rest), device OFF (operation), device ON (operation), and device OFF (post-operation).

Main Results:

  • The unit's activation significantly reduced airborne particles of all measured sizes (p < 0.05).
  • Particle counts increased significantly (p < 0.05) for most sizes when the device was turned off after operation.
  • The mobile unit demonstrated a clear capacity to decrease airborne contaminants.

Conclusions:

  • The mobile air decontamination unit effectively reduces airborne particulate matter in operating rooms.
  • Improved air quality in operating rooms may contribute to a reduction in the incidence of surgical site infections.
