Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Spinal Cord Pathology

Background:

  • Anaplastic gangliogliomas (WHO Grade 3) are exceptionally rare spinal cord tumors.
  • Only four cases have been previously documented in medical literature.

Observation:

  • A 22-year-old female presented with acute quadraparesis and urinary retention.
  • Cervical spine imaging revealed an intramedullary lesion.
  • Surgical resection was performed with neurophysiological monitoring.

Findings:

  • Histopathology confirmed an anaplastic ganglioglioma (WHO Grade 3).
  • Post-operatively, the patient showed partial functional recovery but remained paraparetic.
  • The patient was subsequently treated with radiotherapy and remained stable.

  • This report adds a rare case of cervical anaplastic ganglioglioma to the literature.
  • It underscores the aggressive nature and diagnostic challenges of these spinal cord tumors.
  • Further research into optimal management strategies for anaplastic gangliogliomas is warranted.
