    Background:

    • Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) is a persistent organic pollutant with known toxic effects.
    • Previous studies suggest HCB may possess immunotoxic properties, but findings across species have been conflicting.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the immunotoxic effects of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in rats and dogs.
    • To characterize the impact of HCB on both innate and adaptive immune responses.
    • To assess the vulnerability of the developing immune system to HCB exposure.

    Main Methods:

    • Histopathological examination of lymphoid tissues in rats and dogs following HCB exposure.
    • Functional assessment of cell-mediated and humoral immunity in rats.
    • Evaluation of macrophage function and immune responses to infections and tumor challenges in mice.

    Main Results:

    • In rats, HCB induced lymphoid tissue hyperplasia and enhanced cell-mediated and humoral immunity, even at low doses affecting developing immune systems.
