Area of Science:

  • Neuroimmunology
  • Biochemistry
  • Clinical Medicine

Background:

  • Oxidative stress is implicated in multiple sclerosis (MS) pathogenesis, but clinical data on oxidative stress markers remain inconsistent.
  • This study addresses the need for a quantitative summary of oxidative stress markers in MS patients.

Approach:

  • A systematic literature review and random-effects meta-analysis were conducted.
  • Data from 31 studies, including 2,001 MS patients and 2,212 healthy controls (HC), were analyzed.
  • Concentrations of oxidative stress markers in blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were compared between MS patients and HC subjects.

Key Points:

  • MS patients exhibited significantly higher blood concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and lipid hydroperoxide (CL-LOOH) compared to HC subjects.
  • Blood albumin concentrations were significantly lower in MS patients than in HC subjects.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) MDA concentrations were also significantly associated with MS.

Conclusions:

  • This meta-analysis provides robust clinical evidence for increased oxidative stress in MS.
  • Elevated blood and CSF MDA and reduced blood albumin levels are key indicators of oxidative stress in MS patients.
