Some researchers suggest that altruism operates on empathy. Empathy is the capacity to understand another person’s perspective, to feel what he or she feels. An empathetic person makes an emotional connection with others and feels compelled to help (Batson, 1991). Empathy can be expressed in several ways, including cognitive, affective, and motor.

Background:

Empathy and positive attitudes are crucial for healthcare professionals serving older adults.
This study investigates the effect of aging simulation suits on pharmacy students' empathy.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the impact of an aging simulation suit on undergraduate pharmacy students' empathy.
To evaluate the enhancement of understanding physical and visual limitations associated with aging.

Main Methods:

120 first-year pharmacy students were randomized into a control group (polypharmacy workshop) and an intervention group (aging suit simulation + workshop).
The intervention group experienced simulated physical and visual limitations of aging.
The Jefferson Empathy Scale was used to measure changes in empathy.

Main Results:

The aging simulation suit did not significantly increase self-rated empathy compared to the control group.
Participants reported an enhanced understanding of physical and visual challenges faced by older adults.
The simulation improved perceived health advocacy skills, emphasizing listening, patience, and respect.

Conclusions:

Aging simulation suits can be valuable supplementary tools for teaching the physical and visual aspects of aging to students.
Further research is recommended to explore the impact on other healthcare disciplines.
