Assessment of the Gastrointestinal System II: Health Perception Pattern01:29

Assessment of the Gastrointestinal System II: Health Perception Pattern

343
Assessing the gastrointestinal (GI) system is a complex process that begins with collecting subjective data. This data, collected through patient interviews, provides crucial insights into the patient's health history, perception patterns, and lifestyle habits, all contributing significantly to GI health.
Health Perception Patterns
Health perception patterns offer valuable insights into a patient's lifestyle habits and how they may impact their GI health. These patterns include:

Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders01:20

Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders

898
Gastrointestinal or GI motility disorders are characterized by irregular gastrointestinal tract movements, disrupting food transit from the mouth to the anus. They are caused by damage or dysfunction in gut muscles or nerves. These disorders can cause symptoms such as severe constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and swallowing difficulties. Disorders can affect any segment of the GI tract and range widely in severity, from common conditions like GERD to life-threatening conditions like...

Inflammatory Bowel Disease III: Diagnostic Studies and Management I-Nutritional Therapy

531
Various diagnostic tests are employed in the diagnostic process for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), particularly to differentiate between Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Diagnostic studies
A colonoscopy is the definitive screening test, distinguishing ulcerative colitis from other colon diseases with similar symptoms. During a colonoscopy test, inflamed mucosa with exudate ulcerations can be observed, and biopsies are taken to determine the histologic characteristics of the...

Chronic Bowel Disorders: Introduction

664
Chronic bowel diseases are a group of long-term conditions affecting the digestive tract, characterized by inflammation and damage to the gut lining. These conditions primarily include irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder affecting the gastrointestinal tract. The distinctive feature is recurrent abdominal pain associated with altered bowel movements, manifesting as constipation, diarrhea, or fluctuating between both. The...

Other Disorders of Digestive System

The gastrointestinal tract is susceptible to various disorders. If the lower esophageal sphincter is damaged, stomach acid can flow back into the esophagus, causing irritation and inflammation of the lining. This condition is called gastroesophageal reflux disease (known as heartburn) and may cause chest pain and difficulty swallowing. In the stomach, prolonged use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin, chronic alcohol consumption, bacterial infections such as Helicobacter...

Irritable Bowel Syndrome I: Introduction

761
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is characterized by functional disturbances in the gastrointestinal system, presenting a cluster of symptoms without evident structural or biochemical abnormalities. It primarily affects the large intestine and may cause abdominal pain, bloating, excessive gas, diarrhea, constipation, or both.
IBS is a chronic condition that can persist over a long period or recur frequently.
The pathogenesis of IBS involves a complex interplay of the following factors:
Altered...

Summary

Dietary interventions may help childhood functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). Low-FODMAP (Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols) diets show promise for reducing abdominal symptoms in children with FGIDs.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Gastroenterology
  • Nutritional Science
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (FGIDs) are highly prevalent in children globally.
  • Westernized dietary patterns are increasingly associated with FGID development.
  • Non-pharmacological treatments, including dietary changes, are crucial for managing pediatric FGIDs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review global evidence on dietary interventions for childhood FGIDs.
  • To assess the efficacy of various dietary approaches across different cultures.
  • To identify trends and potential therapeutic strategies for pediatric FGIDs.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of clinical trials on dietary therapies for childhood FGIDs.
  • Literature search conducted on PubMed up to July 13, 2020.
  • Inclusion of studies examining diverse geographical regions and cultural contexts.

Main Results:

  • Evidence suggests a link between Western diets and increased FGID prevalence.
  • Diets low in Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols (FODMAPs) may alleviate abdominal symptoms.
  • Variability in dietary approaches exists across different countries and cultures.

Conclusions:

  • Dietary modifications, particularly low-FODMAP diets, show potential for managing pediatric FGIDs.
  • Further research is necessary to confirm the effectiveness and long-term impact of these interventions.
  • Understanding cultural dietary contexts is important for tailoring FGID treatments.
