Insights
Childhood obesity presents significant early cardiovascular risks. This review outlines key risk factors and prevention strategies for overweight and obese children.
Area of Science:
- Pediatrics
- Cardiology
- Public Health
Background:
- Childhood obesity is a major global health concern, often termed the "disease of the century".
- Overweight and obese children face increased risks of developing early-onset cardiovascular diseases.
- Identifying and addressing these risks is crucial for long-term health outcomes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review early cardiovascular risk factors associated with childhood obesity.
- To summarize current recommendations for preventing these risks in overweight and obese children.
- To provide an updated overview of the literature from 1999 to 2020.
Main Methods:
- A comprehensive literature search was conducted.
- Included articles were published in English and Italian.
- The search covered the period from 1999 to 2020.
Main Results:
- The review synthesizes findings on various cardiovascular risk factors in pediatric obesity.
- Key risk factors identified include hypertension, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance.
- Prevention strategies focus on lifestyle modifications and early intervention.
Conclusions:
- Early identification and management of cardiovascular risks in obese children are essential.
- Implementing preventive strategies can mitigate the long-term health consequences of childhood obesity.
- Continued research and public health initiatives are needed to combat this epidemic.
Abstract:
Childhood obesity is the "disease of the century". This article reviews the early cardiovascular risk factors and the recommendations to prevent them in the overweight and obese children. A comprehensive search of published literature was carried out to identify all articles published on this topic in English and Italian from 1999 to 2020.
