Summary

Short sleep duration is linked to a higher risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study suggests avoiding short sleeping patterns may help reduce kidney function impairment and CKD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the causal effect of short or long sleep duration on the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Main Methods:

  • Utilized UK Biobank data for observational analysis (n=470,724) and Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis (n=321,260).
  • Employed logistic regression for observational associations and MR analyses (including genetic risk score and two-sample MR) to assess causality.
  • Investigated prevalent CKD stages 3-5 as the primary outcome.

Main Results:

  • Both short and long sleep durations were associated with a higher prevalence of CKD compared to intermediate duration.
  • Genetic risk score analysis indicated a significant relationship between short sleep duration and CKD (OR, 1.80; 95% CI, 1.25-2.60).
  • Two-sample MR analysis confirmed a causal effect of short sleep duration on CKD.

Conclusions:

  • Findings support an adverse impact of short sleep duration on kidney function.
  • Reducing short sleeping behaviors may be a strategy to mitigate CKD risk.
