Medical students experience significant techno-stress from technology and internet use. Understanding usage patterns is key to developing guidelines for productive technology integration in medical education.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Digital Health
- Psychology
Background:
- Technology and Information Communication Technology (ICT) tools are widely used by college students, including medical students.
- Overuse or misuse of these tools can lead to physical and psychological problems, potentially impacting long-term professional standing.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore the extent and nature of technology use among medical freshmen.
- To quantify the prevalence of techno-stress and problematic internet use.
- To propose strategies for mitigating negative impacts of technology use.
Main Methods:
- A sample of 61 medical freshmen participated in the study.
- Data collected via a semi-structured questionnaire on demographics and technology usage patterns.
- Perceived Stress Scale used to measure stress levels.
Main Results:
- Students spent an average of 3.96 hours daily on technology.
- Primary uses included education (92%), entertainment (89%), and social networking (77.78%).
- 11.47% showed symptoms of problematic internet use, with 1% exhibiting addiction-like craving; all experienced moderate to high stress.
Conclusions:
- Social media can be a valuable academic tool, but awareness regarding its professional implications is necessary.
- While technology is integral to modern education, focusing on understanding usage patterns can help educators and administrators guide students toward more productive technology engagement.
