Development of the Limb Synovial Joints01:07

Development of the Limb Synovial Joints

2.0K
Joints form during embryonic development in conjunction with the formation and growth of the associated bones. The embryonic tissue that gives rise to all bones, cartilage, and connective tissues of the body is called mesenchyme.
The mesenchymal stem cells differentiate into chondrocytes that form the hyaline cartilage, and later the cartilaginous model of the bone. This model further transforms into a bone. This process is known as endochondral ossification.
During development, the limbs...

    Area of Science:

    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Robotics
    • Prosthetics

    Background:

    • Current prosthetic hands often lack degrees of freedom, limiting mobility and dexterity.
    • Simplification in design and weight reduction can compromise the functional range of prosthetic hands.
    • The omission of finger abduction, except for the thumb, is a common limitation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To present the TN hand, a novel 3D-printed, tendon-driven prosthetic hand.
    • To enhance the range of mobility in prosthetic hands by incorporating finger abduction.
    • To validate the design, manufacturing, and functional capabilities of the TN hand.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized a continuum structure for finger joints.
    • Designed and manufactured a 3D-printed, tendon-driven prosthetic hand (TN hand).
    • Conducted experimental testing of finger stiffness and object manipulation capabilities based on hand taxonomy.

    Main Results:

    • The TN hand successfully incorporates flexion/extension and abduction/adduction movements for four fingers.
    • Experimental validation confirmed the finger stiffness and object manipulation abilities.
    • The prosthetic hand demonstrated sufficient range of motion for tasks like playing column chords.

    Conclusions:

    • The TN hand design significantly improves prosthetic hand mobility through integrated finger abduction.
    • The 3D-printed, tendon-driven approach offers a viable solution for enhanced prosthetic functionality.
    • The TN hand shows promise for improved dexterity and task performance in prosthetic users.
