Area of Science:

  • Marine Technology
  • Sensor Networks
  • Acoustic Communications

Background:

  • Underwater wireless acoustic sensor networks (UWASNs) face challenges with full node initialization.
  • Simultaneous initialization is time- and energy-intensive due to unstable underwater channels.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce the Application-based Partial Initialization (API) protocol for UWASNs.
  • To enhance network efficiency by initializing only application-required nodes.

Main Methods:

  • Simulation-based performance analysis of the proposed API protocol.
  • Comparison of API with conventional full initialization methods.

Main Results:

  • API achieves comparable data statistics to full initialization.
  • API significantly reduces initialization time and message overhead compared to full initialization.

Conclusions:

  • API is a feasible and efficient initialization strategy for UWASNs.
  • Partial initialization tailored to applications offers substantial energy and time savings in UWASNs.
