Adolescent recreational drug abuse of over-the-counter medications is rising. A case study highlights acute liver failure and pancreatitis after ingesting Coricidin®, a cold medicine containing acetaminophen.
Area of Science:
- Toxicology
- Adolescent Medicine
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Increasing trend of recreational drug abuse among adolescents involving over-the-counter (OTC) medications.
- OTC cold medications containing multiple active ingredients pose potential risks when misused.
Observation:
- A case presentation of an adolescent experiencing severe abdominal pain following intentional ingestion of Coricidin®.
- Coricidin® contains acetaminophen, chlorpheniramine maleate, and dextromethorphan hydrobromide.
Findings:
- The patient developed acute liver failure, a known complication of acetaminophen overdose.
- Concomitant pancreatitis was observed, which has been rarely associated with high-dose acetaminophen intake.
Implications:
- Highlights the critical need for awareness regarding the dangers of OTC medication abuse in adolescents.
- Underscores the potential for severe hepatotoxicity and other organ damage from specific ingredients like acetaminophen in misused cold remedies.
- Emphasizes the importance of monitoring and intervention strategies for adolescent substance abuse involving readily available medications.

Acute Pancreatitis I: Introduction
Acute pancreatitis is characterized by rapid inflammation of the pancreas, often caused by factors like gallstone blockage or excessive alcohol consumption. Chronic pancreatitis, on the other hand, is a slow, progressive inflammation that may result from long-term alcohol abuse, obstructions in the pancreatic duct, or genetic factors.

Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas, which occurs when the immune system becomes active and causes swelling, pain, and disruptions in organ function. Pancreatitis can manifest as either an acute or chronic condition.
