Summary

Patients with acromegaly showed a statistically lower capillary count, but it remained within normal limits. Microvascular circulation and capillary morphology were not significantly impaired in acromegaly patients compared to healthy controls.

Background:

  • Acromegaly is associated with endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis.
  • Limited data exists regarding microvascular circulation changes in acromegaly patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and evaluate microvascular circulation in individuals with acromegaly.
  • To compare microvascular parameters between acromegaly patients and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study involving 21 acromegaly patients and 20 healthy controls.
  • Stereomicroscopic evaluation (×100 magnification) of capillary dimensions and count.
  • Statistical analysis using SPSS 15.0.

Main Results:

  • The mean capillary count per milliliter was statistically lower in acromegaly patients (7.67 ± 1.88/mL) versus healthy controls (8.67 ± 0.65/mL), P = 0.04.
  • No significant differences were observed in capillary tortuosity, loop length, or width between the groups.
  • Although lower, the median capillary count in acromegaly patients was within normal ranges.

Conclusions:

  • The observed decrease in capillary count in acromegaly patients was not clinically significant and remained within normal limits.
  • Morphological characteristics of capillaries did not differ between acromegaly patients and healthy controls.
  • Acromegaly may not lead to microvascular impairment despite known associations with endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis.
