Summary

This study found that a new motor-cognitive testing battery is largely independent of traditional neuropsychological testing and motor function assessments. This suggests motor-cognitive function may be a distinct parameter for performance diagnostics in athletes.

Background:

  • Ecological validity of traditional neuropsychological testing (NT) in sports is debated due to lack of bodily movement.
  • Existing NT often relies on pen-and-paper or digital formats, not reflecting dynamic athletic environments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the determinants of a novel motor-cognitive (MC) testing battery.
  • To assess the relationship between the new MC battery and traditional NT and isolated motor function (MF) assessments.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty active individuals completed the MC battery, traditional NT (Stroop, Trail Making, Digit Span), and MF tests (Y-balance, sprint, jump).
  • Kendal's tau and partial Spearman correlations were employed to analyze associations between MC, NT, and MF.

Main Results:

  • The MC battery showed minimal correlation with isolated motor function tests, with few exceptions.
  • MC was largely unrelated to traditional NT, even after controlling for motor function covariates.
  • The Memory Span test within NT showed weak to moderate associations with specific MC items.

Conclusions:

  • Motor-cognitive function appears to be largely independent of traditional neuropsychological testing and motor function.
  • The findings suggest that motor-cognitive function may represent a novel and distinct parameter for performance diagnostics in athletes.
