Background:

  • Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) presents significant challenges in patient prognosis and neurological recovery.
  • Current treatment protocols for severe TBI often yield suboptimal outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on the prognosis and neurological function in patients with severe TBI.
  • To evaluate HBOT as an adjunct to standard care for severe TBI.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 88 patients with severe TBI, randomly assigned to a control group and an experimental group (44 patients each).
  • Both groups received routine care; the experimental group additionally received HBOT approximately one week post-admission after vital sign stabilization.

Main Results:

  • Pre-treatment Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores showed no significant differences between groups.
  • Post-treatment, the HBOT group demonstrated significantly higher GCS scores and lower NIHSS scores compared to the control group.
  • GCS at admission, tracheotomy status, and duration of initial HBOT were identified as independent prognostic factors.

Conclusions:

  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy appears to facilitate the recovery of neurological and cognitive functions in severe TBI patients.
  • HBOT may represent a beneficial therapeutic strategy for improving the prognosis of severe traumatic brain injury.
