Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and compare the validity and reliability of various physical activity assessments used in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • To identify the most accurate and dependable PA assessment tools for COPD research and clinical practice.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted on PubMed and CINAHL databases in December 2019.
  • MeSH terms included physical activity, COPD, validation, and questionnaires.
  • Reporting transparency was evaluated using the STROBE checklist, and methodological quality was assessed using QAREL for reliability and QAVALS for validity studies.

Main Results:

  • Fifteen different PA measures were identified and analyzed.

  • Assisted/computerized PRO measures (PAR, MARCA) and hybrid measures (C-PPAC, D-PPAC) exhibited superior psychometric properties compared to other subjective measures.

Conclusions:

  • Assisted and computerized patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures, alongside hybrid measures, show promise for quantifying physical activity in COPD patients.
  • These tools demonstrate better psychometric properties than other subjective assessment methods.
  • Limitations include reliance on single validation studies, underscoring the need for further research to replicate findings and strengthen recommendations.
