Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention

Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. The health belief model (HBM) attempts to predict health-related behavior in specific belief patterns. According to the HBM, a person's...

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Public Health
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Small to midsize businesses in Alaska with significant Alaska Native workforces were studied.
  • Businesses participated in a randomized trial focused on enhancing health promotion initiatives.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine health insurance benefits, workplace policies, and health promotion programs.
  • To identify opportunities for improving employee health in Alaska Native populations within businesses.

Main Methods:

  • A survey of 26 Alaska businesses (January 2009-October 2010) assessed health benefits, policies, and programs.
  • Frequency statistics were used to analyze data on insurance coverage, tobacco use, physical activity, nutrition, and disease screening/management.

Main Results:

  • Most businesses provided health insurance for full-time employees and dependents.
  • Workplace tobacco bans were common, but cessation coverage was limited; cancer screening was the most covered benefit.
  • While 18 businesses had food vendors, few offered healthy, competitively priced options.

Conclusions:

  • Alaska businesses widely offer chronic disease screening and management benefits and policies.
  • Collaboration with external organizations is crucial for Alaska businesses to enhance health promotion and reduce chronic illness risk.
