    Summary

    Natural beta-interferon (beta-IFN) showed some clinical efficacy in treating hairy-cell leukemia patients. While side effects were noted, partial and minor responses were observed in evaluable participants.

    Background:

    • Hairy-cell leukemia (HCL) is a rare B-cell chronic lymphoid leukemia.
    • Treatment options for HCL have evolved, necessitating exploration of novel therapeutic agents.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of natural beta-interferon (beta-IFN) in patients with histologically proven hairy-cell leukemia.

    Main Methods:

    • Eleven HCL patients received intravenous beta-IFN (3 x 4 million units weekly) for 2 to 6 months.
    • Treatment response was assessed based on clinical improvement and bone marrow infiltration reduction.

    Main Results:

    • Eight patients were evaluable for response.
    • Three patients achieved a partial response, and two experienced a minor response.
