Background:

  • Binge-like eating behavior (BLE) is an eating disorder characterized by excessive food intake, particularly fats.
  • Fat and carbohydrate intake may differentially impact motivation.
  • Previous studies showed BLE increased operant responding for fats.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if BLE induced by sucrose increases motivation for sucrose reinforcers.
  • To determine if BLE affects operant performance for carbohydrate-based rewards.

Main Methods:

  • Male Wistar rats were trained on a progressive ratio schedule of sucrose reinforcement.
  • BLE was induced using a limited access model.
  • Break points (BPs) on the progressive ratio schedule were measured post-BLE induction.

Main Results:

  • BLE induction with sucrose did not lead to increased BPs for sucrose.
  • Flavor-specific reinforcement (vanilla sucrose) and varied ratio schedules did not alter BPs.
  • Rats demonstrated intact valuation of reinforcers, adjusting BPs based on sucrose concentration.

Conclusions:

  • Sucrose-induced BLE in rats does not enhance motivation for sucrose rewards.
  • Valuation of carbohydrate reinforcers remains functional after BLE induction.
  • Further research should explore training extent, reward processing alterations, and fat vs. carbohydrate mechanisms in BLE rodent models.
