Summary

Retinal evaluations using flash electroretinography (fERG) show strong correlations with Parkinson's disease (PD) symptoms. These findings suggest fERG may offer objective insights into central nervous system function in PD patients.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of Parkinson's disease (PD) manifestation and treatment on retinal activity.
  • To explore the utility of flash electroretinography (fERG) in assessing PD.

Main Methods:

  • Collected data from 21 PD participants, including clinical scales and fERG measurements (a-wave, b-wave amplitude, implicit time).
  • Analyzed correlations between clinical variables and fERG parameters.
  • Compared fERG parameters between groups with different antiparkinsonian medication loads.

Main Results:

  • fERG parameters strongly correlated with PD clinical variables, including motor/non-motor symptoms and age at onset.
  • Photoreceptor cell implicit time was longer in participants with fewer medications.
  • No strong evidence of a relationship between medication load and overall fERG parameters.

Conclusions:

  • fERG shows promise as a non-intrusive measure of retinal and central nervous system function in PD.
  • Further research with larger sample sizes is required to confirm these associations.
