    Background:

    • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a significant global health concern.
    • Corneal transplantation is a common procedure for vision restoration.
    • The presence of HBV in ocular tissues is not well-established.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in ocular tissues of donors with known HBV infection.
    • To assess the potential risk of HBV transmission via corneal grafts.

    Main Methods:

    • Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) was used to detect HBsAg.
    • Samples included washings and emulsified corneal tissue from donors with positive serum HBsAg assays.

    • HBsAg was detected in ocular washings from 2 of 3 donors.
