Summary

Sound therapy, combining background sounds and counseling, offers relief for cochlear implant (CI) users experiencing tinnitus. This approach was found acceptable and beneficial for managing tinnitus symptoms without negatively impacting speech perception.

  • Phase 1: 32 CI users evaluated six background sounds for acceptability.
  • Phase 2: 18 CI users underwent a 2-week no-therapy period followed by 5 weeks of sound therapy (background sounds + counseling).

  • 93.8% found at least one background sound acceptable.
  • Sound therapy showed minor improvements in tinnitus loudness, annoyance, and intrusiveness.
