Digital health interventions show promise for improving the quality of life for youth with chronic illnesses. eHealth and mobile health (mHealth) psychosocial support may offer effective alternatives to traditional treatments.
Area of Science:
- Digital Health
- Adolescent Health
- Psychosocial Interventions
Background:
- 12.8% of children and adolescents experience chronic health conditions impacting quality of life and mental well-being.
- Digital health offers a growing avenue for delivering psychosocial support to youth with chronic illnesses.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review the efficacy of eHealth and mobile health (mHealth) psychosocial interventions for youth with chronic illnesses.
- To analyze intervention theory and treatment components within these digital health modalities.
Main Methods:
- Searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, PsycInfo, and Cochrane for studies from 2008-2019.
- Included efficacy studies of eHealth/mHealth psychosocial interventions for youth with chronic illnesses; excluded caregiver, healthy youth, disease management, and basic telehealth studies.
Main Results:
- 16 studies representing 12 unique interventions met inclusion criteria; most were eHealth-based and utilized cognitive behavioral theory.
- 69% of studies reported significant positive changes in health and/or psychosocial outcomes, with small to large effect sizes.
- Heterogeneity in intervention design, content, and outcome measures precluded meta-analysis.
Conclusions:
- Limited but emerging evidence suggests eHealth and mHealth psychosocial interventions can yield positive treatment responses in youth with chronic illnesses.
- Digital health platforms show potential as viable alternatives to traditional face-to-face care delivery models for this population.
