    Area of Science:

    • Microbiology
    • Probiotics

    Background:

    • Lactobacillus species are known for their health benefits.
    • Some Lactobacillus strains produce antimicrobial substances.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To characterize the inhibitory substance produced by Lactobacillus sp. strain GG.
    • To determine the spectrum of activity and properties of this substance.

    Main Methods:

    • Microbiological assay to determine the inhibitory spectrum.
    • Testing of inhibitory activity under different pH and temperature conditions.
    • Chemical characterization including molecular weight and solubility.

    Main Results:

    • Lactobacillus sp. strain GG inhibited a broad range of bacteria, including anaerobes, Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, and Streptococcus.
    • The inhibitory substance was heat-stable, active between pH 3-5, and had a low molecular weight (<1,000).
    • The substance was distinct from lactic/acetic acids and showed bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli at 1:128 dilution.

    Conclusions:

    • The inhibitory substance produced by Lactobacillus sp. strain GG is potent and broad-spectrum.
    • Its characteristics suggest it is a microcin-like compound, not a bacteriocin.
    • This finding has implications for understanding probiotic mechanisms and potential applications.
