Background:

  • Lying synchronization is a key natural behavior in cattle.
  • Current guidelines in Lower Saxony, Germany, recommend adequate space for simultaneous lying.
  • Limited scientific data exists on lying synchrony and space needs for fattening bulls.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze lying synchronization levels in fattening bulls under varying space allowances.
  • To determine if all animals in a pen can lie down simultaneously.

Main Methods:

  • Video analysis of lying behavior in 41 fattening bulls (>450 kg).
  • Cattle housed in groups of 6-8 in pens with rubber-matted slatted floors.
  • Three space allowance groups: 3.1-3.5 m² (A), 4.0-4.2 m² (B), and 6.7 m² (C).

Main Results:

  • Animals spent 5h 30min to 9h 6min lying during 17h light periods.
  • Simultaneous lying of all animals never occurred in some pens within groups A and B.
  • A minimum of 80% of animals lay simultaneously for 1h 30min to 7h 13min across pens.

Conclusions:

  • Simultaneous lying of all animals was not observed in pens with common space allowances (3.1-4.2 m²).
  • Attempts at synchronized lying suggest space limitations restrict this behavior.
  • Further research is needed to define optimal space requirements for simultaneous lying in fattening cattle.
