Benign testicular tumors are rare in Oriental populations. This study reports 12 cases, with testis-sparing surgery successfully preserving testicular function in select patients.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Testicular tumors are uncommon in Oriental individuals.
  • Benign testicular tumors have not been previously documented in this region.
  • Intratesticular tumors require careful diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the incidence and characteristics of benign intratesticular tumors.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of testis-sparing procedures for benign testicular neoplasms.
  • To highlight the role of scrotal ultrasound in preoperative diagnosis.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 70 intratesticular tumor cases treated between 1969 and 1985.
  • Surgical excision with frozen section pathological examination.
  • Testis-sparing procedures for selected benign tumors.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Preoperative diagnosis utilizing scrotal ultrasound.
  • Main Results:

    • Twelve out of 70 cases (17.1%) were benign intratesticular tumors.
    • Common benign types included epidermoid cysts (8 cases), cavernous hemangioma (1), foreign body granuloma with pseudocyst (1), Sertoli cell tumor (1), and simple intratesticular cyst (1).
    • Testis-sparing surgery was performed on 7 patients (5 epidermoid cysts, 1 Sertoli cell tumor, 1 simple cyst), with complete tumor excision and testicular preservation.
    • Scrotal ultrasound accurately diagnosed 2 cases preoperatively.

    Conclusions:

    • Benign intratesticular tumors, though rare, do occur in Oriental populations.
    • Testis-sparing surgery is a viable option for selected benign testicular neoplasms, preserving testicular function.
    • Scrotal ultrasound aids in the accurate preoperative diagnosis of certain benign testicular lesions.
