The upper and lower limb initially develops as a small bulge called a limb bud, which appears on the lateral side of the early embryo. The upper limb bud appears near the end of the fourth week of development, with the lower limb bud appearing shortly after.
Initially, the limb buds consist of a core of mesenchyme covered by a layer of ectoderm. The ectoderm at the end of the limb bud thickens to form a narrow crest called the apical ectodermal ridge. This ridge stimulates the underlying...

Summary

Retronychia, a cause of paronychia, may not always require total nail removal. While nail avulsion is most effective, early mild cases might benefit from topical steroids, warranting further study.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Nail Diseases

Background:

  • Retronychia is an emerging cause of paronychia.
  • Traditionally, total nail plate avulsion was the standard treatment for retronychia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate treatment recommendations for patients with retronychia.
  • To review existing literature on retronychia case reports.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of all published articles reporting case reports of retronychia.

Main Results:

  • Total nail plate avulsion remains the most effective treatment for retronychia.
  • Topical steroids and noninvasive methods show potential in early, mild cases.

Conclusions:

  • While nail avulsion is highly effective, conservative treatments may suffice for select patients.
  • Further prospective studies are necessary to confirm the efficacy of noninvasive approaches for retronychia.
