Summary

A rare tracheal complication after intubation, obstructive fibrinous tracheal pseudomembrane (OFTP) can cause respiratory distress in cats. Prompt diagnosis and surgical removal of the pseudomembrane lead to full recovery.

Identification of Neutrophil Extracellular Traps in Paraffin-Embedded Feline Arterial Thrombi using Immunofluorescence Microscopy

Background:

Tracheal intubation (TI) is a common veterinary procedure.
While generally safe, TI can rarely lead to serious complications.

Observation:

A 1.5-year-old cat exhibited severe respiratory distress 5 weeks post-TI.
Radiographs showed significant tracheal narrowing.
A 5-cm obstructive tissue was removed from the trachea.

Findings:

Microscopic analysis revealed the tissue was an obstructive fibrinous tracheal pseudomembrane (OFTP), containing fibrin, neutrophils, talcum powder, and hair.
The cat's condition resolved completely after pseudomembrane removal.

Implications:

OFTP, a known complication in humans, should be considered in cats with similar clinical signs and history.
Early detection and surgical removal of OFTP are effective treatments for feline respiratory distress post-TI.
