Obturator hernia: case report

Obturator hernia, a rare abdominal wall defect, can cause bowel obstruction. Early diagnosis is crucial for better outcomes in elderly patients with acute surgical abdomen symptoms.

Observation:
- A 65-year-old female presented with symptoms of acute surgical abdomen, including crampy abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.
- Intraoperative findings revealed a left-sided obturator hernia causing small bowel obstruction.
Findings:
- The patient was diagnosed with acute surgical abdomen and successfully managed surgically.
- Despite a delayed presentation, the patient experienced an uncomplicated postoperative recovery.
Implications:
- Obturator hernia presents a diagnostic challenge due to nonspecific signs and symptoms, often leading to delayed diagnosis.
- Consider obturator hernia in the differential diagnosis for elderly patients presenting with acute surgical abdomen.
