Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Urology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Multilocular cystic renal lesions present diagnostic challenges.
  • Distinguishing benign from malignant cystic renal masses is difficult.

Observation:

  • Six patients with benign cystic kidney lesions and one with cystic renal carcinoma were studied.
  • Preoperative diagnosis was challenging for all presented cases.

Findings:

  • Modern imaging techniques and aspiration cytology lack definitive signs for benign multilocular renal lesions.
  • Unequivocal diagnostic criteria for benignity in these lesions are not established.

Implications:

  • Surgical intervention is the recommended treatment of choice for multilocular renal lesions.
  • The findings highlight the need for careful surgical consideration in managing cystic renal masses.
