Summary

Readiness potential (RP) is an electroencephalogram (EEG) signal before action. Approximately half of subjects lack early RP during instructed actions, possibly due to reduced negative potential shifts.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Electrophysiology

Background:

  • Readiness potential (RP) is a pre-action electroencephalogram (EEG) signal.
  • Some individuals do not exhibit standard RP, particularly during instructed actions.
  • The origins of this RP absence remain unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Investigate the origins of absent early readiness potential (RP).
  • Examine RP and voltage topographies in subjects performing voluntary and instructed hand movements.
  • Determine if a decreased negative potential shift explains the lack of early RP.

Main Methods:

  • Recorded EEG from 29 subjects during voluntary and instructed hand movements.
  • Categorized subjects into SHOW and NOSHOW groups based on early RP presence.
  • Analyzed RP waveforms, voltage topographies, and early phase slopes.

Main Results:

  • Early RP was absent in 14 of 29 subjects during instructed actions.
  • The NOSHOW group exhibited a decreased proportion of negative potential shifts.
  • Voltage topographies differed between the SHOW and NOSHOW groups.

Conclusions:

  • Early RP is absent in about half of subjects during instructed actions.
  • A reduced negative potential shift may underlie the absence of early RP.
  • This finding offers insights into the neural mechanisms preceding voluntary action.
