Summary

Infant cry's fundamental frequency (F0) showed a weak link to attention disengagement in one group of infants. This study suggests early cry acoustics may not reliably predict cognitive development in the first year.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate associations between infant cry acoustic features and cognitive development during the first year of life.

  • Neonatal cry sounds were analyzed for fundamental frequency (F0) in two cohorts (Finland and South Africa).
  • Infant cognitive skills, including oculomotor orienting and attention disengagement, were assessed using eye-tracking at 6-8 months of age.

  • A marginal positive correlation was found between neonatal F0 and attention disengagement in the Finnish cohort only.
  • Infants with higher neonatal F0 were slightly slower to disengage visual attention.

  • The findings suggest a limited and potentially non-replicable association between neonatal cry F0 and visual attention skills in infancy.
