Background:

  • Phantom eye syndrome (PES) is a poorly understood complication following eye amputation (EA).
  • It manifests as phantom eye pain (PEP), phantom visions, and/or phantom sensations.
  • Understanding PES is crucial for improving patient care post-EA.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of phantom eye pain (PEP) after eye amputation (EA).
  • To identify risk factors, psychosocial consequences, and quality of life impacts associated with PEP.
  • To investigate the relationship between pre-operative and post-operative factors and PEP.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire-based study was conducted across three oculoplastic departments.
  • 185 patients who underwent eye amputation (EA) at least 3 months prior were invited to participate.
  • Data collected included patient demographics, surgical history, and validated scales for anxiety, depression, and quality of life (EQ-5D).

Main Results:

  • Of 115 respondents, 47% reported phantom eye pain (PEP).
  • Anxiety (34%) and depression (42%) were prevalent post-EA.
  • Multivariate analysis revealed a significant association between postoperative anxiety and PEP (p=0.009).

Conclusions:

  • Phantom eye pain (PEP) is a common complication after eye amputation (EA).
  • Postoperative anxiety is a key predictor of PEP.
  • Addressing psychological factors like anxiety may be vital in managing PEP.
